Tools – Notice Your Feelings.

Posted on: March 26, 2010

When you are angry or feeling sorry for yourself, notice what you’re feeling.  Say nothing out loud.  Just notice your feelings.  Become aware of them.  Discover where in your body you feel your anger.  Is it in your gut?  Your neck?  Your knees?  Your lower back?  What does it feel like?  How much energy do you now have?  Stay in close contact with your feelings until they shift, and then notice what your feelings next become.  Notice your state of comfort or discomfort.  Notice how each feeling you have shifts, if you just allow it.
Now breathe into your anger-holding place and relax.  Write your discoveries.  Keep doing this exercise until you really understand your own reactions and their deeper meaning.  Then make associations with your past.  Ask yourself when you felt like this before, and with whom?  Ask yourself if there is anything happening right now in the present that is producing such intense feelings.  Are you reliving your past?  You decide.  If you are in the past, you can simply drop it and focus on the present.  If you are in fear, focus on your breath.  Think about how you are grown-up and safe now.
