Advice For Children Of Substance Abusing Adults

1) Remember the seven C’s:

I didn’t Cause it.
I can’t Cure it.
I can’t Control it.
I can take better Care of myself:
by Communicating my feelings,
making healthy Choices,
Celebrating myself.

2) Talk about how you feel with a safe person in your life – a close friend,
relative, school counselor, teacher, religous leader or other person.

3) Get involved in enjoyable things such as school activities, scouting, athletics.
Have fun.

4) Don’t ride in a car when the driver has been drinking if you can avoid it.
If you can’t avoid it, sit in the back seat in the middle, lock the door and put on your
seat belt.
